National Sports Associations

Sports Tournaments Organized by Associations

The Sports Tournaments organised by national sports associations under the Ministry of Youth and Sports may be divided into four main categories. They are:

  1. Official Tournaments
  2. International Tournaments
  3. Unofficial Tournaments
  4. Others

1.  Official Tournaments

Official Tournaments are open to members of the association organising the tournament. Clubs and organisations registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Housing and Environment, who are registered as members of the respective association are eligible to participate. Official tournaments organised by an association are, in general, the National Tournament for the sports for which the respective association is responsible, and the Association Cup.  These tournaments are divided into divisions, based on the number of participants and their skill levels.

Athletes participating in national tournaments have the total freedom to change to other clubs as players, and the opportunity to transfer within the framework of the club they represent.

2. International Tournaments

International tournaments are hosted among foreign teams and local clubs invited by an association. International tournaments hosted in the Maldives are POMIS Cup Soccer Tournament Invitational Volleyball Tournament, and SAARC Carom Championship.

3. Unofficial Tournaments

Unofficial Tournaments are open to associate members, and parties awarded temporary membership of an association, in addition to members.  Government offices, companies, resorts, clubs/associations who are not registered members of an Association, and unregistered teams assembled together for the sole purpose of competing in a tournament may participate in Unofficial Tournaments.  Such Tournaments include Tournament for Government Offices, Tournaments for Companies, and other tournaments organised under various names by the Association

4. Others
In this category are tournaments organised by groups outside the Associations, with assistance from the Associations. These include inter-school tournaments, and tournaments organised by various island-level clubs and associations.

NOTE:  Rules and regulations on the transfer of players from one club to another are formulated by the respective Associations
